Agnes McKenzie,
100 Agnes McKenzie becomes a
centenarian this month. Born in southern Maryland in May 1907, she
is the youngest of nine children (four boys and five girls) born to
a farmer and a housewife. The family lived on the water and enjoyed
fishing and crabbing. She is the last living member of her family
and the second who has reached the age of 100.
Agnes moved to the city as a young lady and
began work at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. Eventually she would
work in payroll and accounting. Those were the days when accounting
was done by hand, without the aid of computers and calculators. She
married and had two children, a son and a daughter. Agnes has six
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. |
After she
retired from her business career, she joined various senior groups
and spent much of her time learning and practicing dancing; she
appeared in numerous seniors' skits involving such activities as
square dancing. She also took various trips to other parts of the
country, including Hawaii with her senior friends.
She currently resides in the Annapolis,
Maryland, area with her daughter and enjoys reasonably good health.
She goes shopping regularly with her daughter, friends and
neighbors, and she loves dining out with friends and family. One of her
favorite pastimes is working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. There is
almost always one in progress at her home.
Agnes today delights in the company of her
family and always welcomes their visits. Nothing pleases her more
than to see them together, and to see them talking, playing and
enjoying life together. |

Her recipe for living a long
life is to always watch her diet, minimum intake of alcohol, getting
proper exercise and rest, as well as faith in God and treating
others as one would like to be treated. |
